MAPPING THE FUTURE GC:
GC
ROUNDTABLE,
NEW YORK
Catherine McGregor (CM): Has the role of the
in-house lawyer changed significantly since you
first went in-house?
Kim Siegel:
When I started at Standard Bank
many years ago, the perception was that the
lawyers are on the top floor of an ivory tower;
that they never come down from it and they
don’t really know what’s going on. We had to
make a conscious effort to integrate legal with
the business and to make sure that we were
accessible. We left the top floor, went down into
the business, went to management meetings,
and slowly but surely, our colleagues learned
that we were there to support them, help them,
and protect them.
IN OCTOBER 2015,
GC
GATHERED TOGETHER A GROUP OF GENERAL
COUNSEL IN NEW YORK TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF THE GC ROLE
AND INNOVATIONS ON THE HORIZON.
