DLA Piper, tapping into its comprehensive international network, conducts Latin American arbitration work predominantly from its Mexico City, New York and Lima offices. Mexico City acts as the firm’s regional hub and boasts two arbitration specialists in Kate Brown de Vejar, global arbitration co-chair, and Gabriela Álvarez-Ávila, co-head of the Latin America disputes group. The pair have extensive experience in commercial disputes and arbitrations relating to investment treaties such as those governed by NAFTA. The Lima office offers a solid Peruvian base while also covering other South American jurisdictions, with arbitration specialists Carlos Núñez and Hernán Jordán handling cases across sectors such as energy, real estate, and retail. Recently, New York-based James Berger and Charlene Sun have successfully enforced an arbitration award arising out of Venezuela’s expropriation of the clients’ gold mining assets. Alberto Rubio leads an arbitration team out of Buenos Aires, while Michael Ostrove, global co-chair of international arbitration, splits his time between Paris and New York.
